As we have introduced in our previous articles, balsa
is one of the most popular wood types both in domestic and
international markets. It can be used widely for making surfboard,
models, doll houses and furniture, especially for making airplane
models. It is the most light wood in the world, but it is very durable
and has great strength. Generally, it is more expensive than other kinds
of wood. It is the wood from balsa trees. Balsa tree is one kind of
trees that mainly grow in the rainforest in America.
Frankly speaking, the balsa wood
can be sorted into three types as we have introduced before. Here we
will give you a more detailed introduction. Well, the wood can be
A-Grain, B-Grain and C-Grain. The grain type is determined by the
orientation of the cut to the grain. And the grain direction controls
the rigidity and flexibility more than the density of the wood. A-Grain
balsa wood has long grain lines along the length of the wood. It is the
most easy type to carve since it is very flexible and can be bend very
easily around curves. This kind of wood is the best choice for sheet
covering rounded edges, planking, and making flexible spars. B-Grain has
shorter lines than A-Grain, and feels stiffer across the sheet. This is
perhaps the most common grain type. While C-Grain has a mottled
appearance. Aesthetically, it has better grain detail and it is better
for use where the look of tighter grain pattern is desired. Compared
with other grains, it is more warp resistant and stiff. If you need the
strong wood, you are advised to choose C-Grain balsa wood.
Here comes the density of balsa. The balsa wood varies widely in
density. Believe it or not, the balsa ever being found weighing as
little as 4 lbs. per cu. ft. However, there are also balsa weighing as
much as 25 lbs. or more per cu. ft. Generally, the average weight of
commercial balsa will weigh between 6 lbs. per cu. ft. The average
weight of balsa should be 8 to 12 lb and the most plentiful. Six pounds
or less is very rare and difficult to obtain.
When selecting balsa, you are advised to choose the most light one. You
are advised to take consideration of the way the grain runs through the
sheet as well as the weight of the sheet as we discussed above. The
rigidity or flexibility of a balsa sheet mainly depend on the grain
direction actually. Frankly speaking, SYNHONG is one of the most famous
supplier of balsa. We supply high-qualified balsa wooden raw materials
as well as related industrial products, e.g. balsa sheet, balsa
rectangle, flexible panel and other standard balsa sets. To find more
